2007 Inaugural Season
The Capitals finished their 2007 inaugural season at Olympia Stadium (Kenilworth at Perkins) by posting a record of 5 Wins - 7 Losses - 4 Ties for a total of 19 points. The team plays in the Mid-South Division, which plays in the Southern Conference. At the end several teams were just one point away from each other. The leader in the Capitals' Division - Laredo Heat - played in their second straight North American Leaguefinal this August, winning it all, which speaks volumes about the competitive nature of the Mid-South Division.
The owner, management and staff of the Capitals want to THANK ALL OF THE FANS AND SPONSORS for making the 2007 season a great one. It was a wonderful family atmosphere where young players could enjoy the game while learning at the same time. Parents had a blast watching this high-level competition from the great viewing seats that the Capitals' field provided. And a great group of vocal supporters enjoyed each game by poking good humored fun at the opponents and the referees alike.
The Capitals are one of the United Soccer League's newest Premier Development League (PDL) team which is comprised of 63 teams throughout North America. This league is over 20 years old. The establishment of a PDL team in Baton Rouge brought top-notch soccer to a flourishing soccer community that had previously a void of quality soccer. Read More on Baton Rouge Capitals development.
Coaching the team through their inaugural season was Bo Cassidy. Cassidy, a veteran coach and collegiate player at UMass Amherst, was able to attract a lot of local talent to the team during the open trials which occurred in March of 2007. He was also successful in bringing in some top collegiate players residing in our area as well as throughout the New Orleans and North Shore areas of Louisiana One of the Capitals players went on to play on the Irish National Team.
Tryouts for the Capitals 2008 season will be announced in the media, but should held around the same time frame next March where the best talent of south Louisiana may try out to be a part of this new intense and rewarding experience. Though several hundred tried out for the 2007 squad, only a select few were chosen to play at this high a level.
The Capitals began their 2007 home season, on May 12, against Dallas Ft. Worth Tornados - which finished third in the division - and ended their first season against the Laredo Heat - which finished first in the division and North American Champions.
Now that the season has concluded a few of the Capitals players are in Europe trying out for several soccer clubs, and the majority of the players are back playing at their respective colleges and universities. Several players remain here in the Baton Rouge area, and there will be occasions where fans can meet with these players, get autographs, and participate in events.
