THE SPELL IS BROKEN, CAPITALS WIN ON THE ROAD
It was a historical moment for the Baton Rouge Capitals franchise. Since it's inception in 2007, the Capitals had not won a game on the road. This year several close calls took place as Capitals dominated the play away from Baton Rouge. However, it was not to be as time and over a great performance from the opponent's keeper, the crossbar or failure to score a wide open chance held the capitals winless on the road.
All of that changed on Friday night. A very focused Capitals took the field at the Soccer World Center, home of the Houston Leones. As it has happened in the past several games, the Capitals took charge early but missed many scoring opportunities. On the 5th minute, Leo Barros scored a goal to have the celebration cut short by a handball call. On the 7th minute, Ricardo Santos was denied by his own teammate when his shot was blocked by Diego Michelato preventing the ball from entering the net. On the 12th minute another great scoring opportunity went by when Diego Michleato missed a wide open header. On the 18th minute, Gino Ray found himself face to face with the keeper, off a clearance from Dustin Brim but missed touched the ball and could not finish. Finally on the 25th minute, Leo Barros broke the spell. He scored on play coming from Ricardo Santos, the Brazilan mid-fielder was able to break the Leones defense, opening the score for the match. Shortly after that on the 34th minute, on another centralize play, Lea Barrro and Diego Michelato excuted quick give and goes with Michelato finishing for a 2 -0 lead that stood at half time.
Although the second half saw a goal from the Houston Leones, on a penalty kick, the Capitals continued to press on. This time on a flank play a combination between Leo Barros and Thiago Silva a ball was served from the left to a well positioned Gino Ray. However what seemed to be a sure goal for Ray was intercepted by the Houston defender resulting in an on goal. The Capitals stilled has a couple more great chances that went unconverted and the final score was 3-1.
As one more challege was overcome by the Capitals by establishing the first road victory, more important goals lay ahead. On Wednesday the Baton Rouge team will scrimmage a Mexican first division feeder team ,Montrey Raydaos,i n preparation for a showdown on Saturday, June 12, verus league leaders Austin Aztex. With three remaining league games, the Capitals hope to continue to break franchise records.
