“Let’s win the league – and the playoffs!” is the call-to-arms of Baton Rouge Capitals
new general manager Ben Callon following the recent takeover of the club by new owner,
Dr John Hamide .
While Arabian, Russian, and Chinese multi-billionaires have been buying English Premier
League soccer teams like kids in a candy store, recent news of the takeover of PDL
soccer team Baton Rouge Capitals for an undisclosed figure has caused just as much
excitement among enthusiasts of soccer throughout Baton Rouge and southern Louisiana.
“League championship and play-offs victory our aim,” says Capitals new GM following
buy-out
Newly installed as general manager following his move from New Orleans, Callon declared:
“We setting our sights on success in our very first season. Although the players
are all amateur, Baton Rouge Capitals will be run on the lines of a professional
soccer club eager for success. We are in the process of appointing experienced management
personnel to manage all aspects of the club in the most professional manner, and
who will recruit quality players.”
He concluded, “We all have one aim in mind for Capitals in the 2010 season: to finish
top of our league and to win the play-offs.”
Leading the management team are general managers Ben Callon and Edwin Ruiz. Callon
has joined Capitals from local rivals New Orleans Jesters, where the former Burnley,
England, youth star was also General Manager and player; while Honduran Ruiz, a former
all-American player of the year two years running, joins from Roma New Orleans.
Background
Unlike the high-profile owners of many clubs, Dr Hamide, an interventional radiologist
who lives near Baton Rouge, has vowed to remain in the background and let his management
team and players do their job. Said Ruiz, “Dr. Hamide is as passionate about the
Capitals as any fan, but you won’t be hearing very much from him; he has some fantastic
staff and players in prospect to do that. The talking will be on the field”.
Callon and Ruiz are also the first exciting additions to the Capitals’ playing squad
as highly-accomplished attacking midfield players, while their combined off-field
talents will provide the benefit of in-depth expertise on the business side of the
club and the playing side respectively.
Supporting the management team is recently-appointed Marketing and Development Coordinator
Stephen Smith, who has significant experience in business and marketing and who has
been involved in English soccer throughout his life. “We have some exciting plans
to make Baton Rouge Capitals more accessible for the fans and to make the match-day
experience something extra special for the tremendous support that the city and the
region has. Beginning, of course, with a winning team – both on and off the pitch,”
said Smith.
