Baton Rouge CULT Capitals 3, Fort Lauderdal Schultz Academy 0  (Saturday 17th July, 2010 – PDL Southestern Division)

Baton Rouge Capitals reached the play-offs for the first time in the club’s short history with a fine 3-0 win over Fort Lauderdale Schultz Academy, Saturday. Goals from Brandon Chagnard, Tom Settle, and Andrew Wright sealed a comfortable victory which took Capitals into the last 16 of the PDL competition which pits the top two teams from geographic divisions across the country for the National Championship.

Fielding an under-strength side – Callon was suspended and the Portillo brothers, along with last weeks’ hat-trick hero Joe Tait, were all rested – while Puerto Rican national team goalkeeper Salvatore made his debut between the sticks.

Capitals found the winless visiting side devoid of challenge, preferring to place 10 or 11 men behind the ball.

This produced an uneventful first half, as Capitals probed with wave after wave of attack and with some creative midfield play, but they failed to find the net. A fierce shot from defender Chris Williams produced an athletic save from the Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper, who was also tested with shots from Anderson and McCubbin.

Intent
However, the stalemate was ended within minutes of the second half getting under way after a series of headers showed Capitals’ continued attacking intent. A 58th minute Tom Settle corner was met by
Brandon Chagnard, who turned to blast a low drive just inside the left-hand post to make the score 1-0.

Capitals continued to outplay their defensive-minded opponents and mounted relentless strikes on the Fort Lauderdale final third, with even full-back Stuart Hayers getting in on the action with a long-range shot which was collected safely.

A free-kick to Capitals just outside the penalty area was taken by Tom Settle who drove his shot through the defense and just inside the left-hand post to double the Capitals’ score on 67 minutes and put the game beyond any believable reach of the visitors.

Capitals almost scored again immediately after the re-start as a goalmouth scramble saw the ball bobble almost on the line before it was cleared away to safety by the Fort Lauderdale defence.  After a succession of substitutions in the evening heat, it was substitute Andrew Wright who put the result beyond any doubt in the 78th minute with his first goal for the club: a shot from just inside the area which flew past a hapless goalkeeper. Three-nil ; and the excited Capitals crowd were already celebrating achieving the home team’s play-off qualification.

Mark Anderson almost made it four when he collected a long ball and produced a diving save on 89 minutes and the final whistle was greeted with rousing cheers and a cacophony of horns as the Capitals players acknowledged the loyalty of their supporters.

Tom Settle: one goal and one assist in a convincing victory which took Baton Rouge CULT Capitals to the play-offs for the first time in their history.
