National Champions signings herald first step towards title-winning season for Capitals

Baton Rouge Capitals have signed two National Champions - New Orleans Jesters’ star Chris Williams and Lindsey Wilson College’s Joe Tait - as the first steps towards their stated PDL Championship drive for the 2010 season.

Center-back Chris Williams (above) was part of Jesters’ undefeated regular season last year, and was also placed on the PDL team of the year in 2009.  Williams then went on to win a NAIA National title in December of 2009 alongside NAIA Powerhouse Lindsey Wilson, and was also named to the NAIA National Championship and collected the MVP of the tournament.

Joe Tait (right) a former English Football League player, who will partner Williams in a central defensivewp567f2eab_0f.jpg pairing, has been captured from Lindsey Wilson College, KY and he and Williams are well-known to Capitals’ GM Ben Callon and recently-appointed head coach Stuart Hayers.

Chris Williams expressed his excitement at moving from the city to join Capitals, saying: "Obviously I am very excited to be part of the Baton Rouge Capitals organization. I played alongside Ben Callon last year at New Orleans as well as against head coach Stuart Hayes a couple of times, so it made the decision easy to join Baton Rouge from New Orleans.”

He added: “This new challenge excites me, and I am extremely happy to be playing for the club. I really can’t wait to start the season for the Capitals. Hopefully the World Cup can bring some welcome attention and, with this, I am sure the fans will come out to Olymia stadium in droves to support the lads in what we are all planning to be a fantastic season"

Capitals’ head coach Stuart Hayers remarked: “Signing a player of Chris's ability and talent sends a strong message regarding our goals for the season. In my time in soccer I have yet to see a more rounded defender and I fully expect him to achieve great things and move on to the next level"

GM and player Ben Callon – who also played a part of New Orleans’ successful 2009 season - stressed the importance of having Chris Williams in the team, and remarked, "Chris was the first person I called when the new ownership appointed me as General Manager. After recruiting him to New Orleans last season we formed a strong bond and I am happy he stayed loyal to me and that he knew I would be looking to achieve the goals he has set for himself"

Joe Tait comes to Olympia Stadium as a central defender who red-shirted for the National Champions as a freshman. Tait previously played for Hartlepool United in the English Football League and, after finding himself released from Hartlepool, he jumped at the chance to play under hall of fame coach Ray Wells at Lindsey Wilson in Kentucky.

Tait is eagerly anticipating his first season in the USA with Capitals and said: "I am looking forward to the chance to play at Baton Rouge. The ambition of the Capitals’ staff sold me on the club, and playing alongside Chris Williams is a massive plus.”

Head coach Stuart Hayers is delighted to have signed Tait and said, "Joe brings with him experience of the professional game in England, which is unusual at such a young age. He and Chris Williams will be a formidable pairing at the center of defence. We are all delighted to have him signed.”
