Capitals sign Great
Britain duo “the Beckham and Gerrard of college soccer

Baton Rouge Capitals have signed “the Beckham and Gerrard of college soccer” with the arrival of Great Britain World Games participants Scott McCubbin and Tom Settle.
The signings are historic for the franchise as these two players represent the elite of college soccer worldwide.

McCubbin (left) and Settle (above) were selected from the England Universities’ squad and NCAA Division II National Champions Fort Lewis respectively.  The World Games 2009, were held in Belgrade, Serbia and featured over 9,000 athletes and delegates from over 30 countries. Great Britain finished in their highest standings for 20 years with a 4th placed finish, narrowly losing out on a medal on a penalty shootout to Ukraine, the eventual tournament winners.

Capitals’ player-coach Stuart Hayers also played alongside the pair in last year’s World Games and was anxious to bring them to Baton Rouge as soon as he was appointed at Olympia Stadium.

McCubbin hails from Bishop Auckland, England, and has been successful at every level before making the transition to US college soccer with NCAA II powerhouse Lynn University.  McCubbin captained his college in his first season while studying for his MBA.

Stuart Hayers explained that McCubbin’s signing is a huge boost for Capitals: “He is of the highest caliber and a major signing for the club. Everyone I have spoken with agrees that Scott is a difference-maker. He has excelled in England and was even selected to represent England in the British home nations tournament ".

Leader
Hayers added: “Scott is a leader both on and off the field, and he will help the development of our younger players by leading by example. Upon my arrival at Olympia [Stadium] he was my priority signing and I'm very lucky to have secured his signature in the face of fierce competition"

Nicknamed “Scabbers”, McCubbin made it clear that Baton Rouge was the only place he wanted to be: “The Capitals’ staff are among the most hungry and driven individuals I have ever met and they really want to build something here. Naturally I want to be a part of that.

“I had some other offers to go elsewhere, but Capitals looked by far the best opportunity for me and once i knew they were interested I didn’t hesitate.”

McCubbin promised to energize the team, declaring:  “I will bring a lot of energy to midfield, a bit of bite, and a passing game that will complement the flair which will be seen from the team that coach Hayers is putting together.”

Tom Settle arrives at Baton Rouge surround by a similar air of excitement, having also impressed Stuart Hayers at the World Games in Serbia. “He is the country’s leading player in assists and this is no surprise to me. When I approached Tom about playing it was more of a fantasy; luckily for Baton Rouge he liked what we are doing here and wanted to be a part of it.”
