Underdogs Capitals in determined mood for play-offs success
Baton Rouge CULT Capitals enter this weekend’s Southern Conference play-offs in determined
mood despite being underdogs, according to General Manger Ben Callon.
And the club’s leading goalscorer, with nine goals in the regular season, said the
club is determined to use the experience of his and a number of Capitals’ players
to make sure the club is not eliminated at the first hurdle.
“Although this is the first time Capitals has been here, we as a club know we will
have under-achieved if we go out as this stage,” said Callon. “We have come out of
a difficult Division in a strong second place and we have the squad to progress further
into the competition.”
He added, “Myself and a number of other Capitals’ players lost at this stage last
season with our previous club and it is not a good feeling. We are determined to
use the experience we gained to make sure it does not happen to Baton Rouge this
year.”
Capitals will venture into uncharted territory when they face Mid-South Division
champions Laredo Heat in the Southern Conference play-off semi-final (Friday July
30th at Millsaps College, Jackson, MS. Kick-off 5.00pm).
Baton Rouge faces Laredo as underdogs, as this is the first time in its four-year
history that Capitals has reached post-season; while Laredo Heat is in very familiar
with the territory, having been involved with the play offs for the past six seasons.
Laredo Heat won the Mid-South Division with 29 points and a 9-5-2 record; while Capitals
made second place in the Southeast Division with 30 points and a 9-2-3 record.
Player-coach Stuart Hayers added: "The Mid-South Division is a very tough league
and, having played a part in that league in 2008, I know just how good Laredo can
be. They have been consistently one of the best teams in the PDL for several years
and we are looking forward to the game against them.” About being the underdog,
he added, "History means nothing at this stage and the best team on the night will
win the game.
Hayers concluded, “I expect it to be very entertaining and we are determined to be
playing for the Southern Conference title on Sunday night."
Capitals returns to a
full-strength squad after resting players for last weekend’s final game of the regular
season, against Mississippi Brilla, due to potential suspensions and injury.
Team captain and midfielder Scott McCubbin added: "This is the first time for many
of us going in to play-offs but it’s just another game we have to win and, having
a full squad, we are confident we can do that. It is great to have reached this stage
of the season with Baton Rouge Capitals."
